Buck ends up showing that he is a changed dog and has adapted to the life in the north when he kills the lead dog Spitz it a battle for who must lead the pack.
In Canada he encounters many changes and adventures. During his stay with the two mailmen Francois and Perrault, Buck develops a rivalry with the lead sled dog Spitz. He is bought by two Canadian mailmen that need sled dogs to pull them through the winter north. Being kidnapped from his home of comfort and luxury in California, Buck is sold and moved north illegally to Seattle. Jack London's “The Call of the Wild” is about a journey of a half St. It is one of the fewer texts that exists that has a high Lexile level yet is appropriate for readers 6th-7th (depending on maturity of a 5th grader, it might be acceptable). Overall, the text is complex with numerous underlying themes and an elaborate writing style. Also, in chapter 7, there is the use of a racially-derived term that is offensive. Dogs are killed by other dogs and are also put down due to illness. This book can be challenging for sensitive students as there is animal cruelty and violence, which is detailed and specific at times. My students have either loved the book (typically students who gravitate to survival books) or have hated the book. Personally, this is not the most engaging text in the world. The text is written through an animal's perspective and presents opportunities for discussion on numerous themes and topics (survival, instincts, primitive elements, adapting, wilderness, animal cruelty, the inner animal, and so forth). This book is considered a classic and is often examined in middle school. But it’s important to show how perseverance has to be chosen again and again to survive. Once again, yes, this is a rough and fierce tale.
I did elect to alter some terms: ie Scots for the Scottish man and Schwartz (for the black dog Night. I hope you will not keep this book from yourself. Without fierce survival no civilization can follow. It was true 1000s of years ago, a 100 years ago, and still today. Humans in wilderness are a gruesome sort. To them, I wonder, how many actually finished and ruminated on the lessons. Many of the reviews here seem to be very negative and against such a tale still being considered a classic. And not when your little brother is taking 3 extra seconds to respond to your request. It has been my opinion that this story is an example of when true fight and perseverance are needed.

I felt my 8.5yo was ready to tackle this together because he is my oldest, we farm & ranch on the northern midwestern prairie, and are full of big feelings to learn to navigate. He is no longer a fireside warm and breathing thing to pet but a howling sparring animal full of the pulsing desire to more than survive but OWN the Yukon. Thus, he is forced to awaken to what he truly is, canine, or, expire. Buck, main character, is plucked from his cushy Southland life. If you are unfamiliar with the story you are in for a turbulent ride. Yet, I would not recommend turning an 8yo loose with this book. I have selected 8+ if you are reading along with or to your child. This is a tale that needed to be told in early 1900s and still has a place in the world and lessons for us to grow into becoming good humans today. Which Side of History?
